Pregnancy & Bikram Yoga
Bikram Yoga is miraculous and invaluable at relieving stress and anxiety, building strength, balance, and flexibility, restoring health and vitality, and tightening the loose screws in the brain. All of these benefits are important more than ever during pregnancy!!! First and foremost, fears must be overcome in pregnancy and a trust must be maintained with our minds and bodies during this exciting time of change and growth.

It is essential that you have been practicing regularly and have a clear understanding of Bikram Yoga before you conceive if you wish to continue your class practice throughout your pregnancy. In other words, it is not recommended to begin practicing Bikram Yoga when you get pregnant, but to practice Rajashree’s Home Pregnancy Video would be an excellent guide to yoga throughout your pregnancy and will condition you to start Bikram Yoga after your baby arrives. If you are planning to get pregnant, Bikram Yoga will be an amazing tool in getting your body ready for pregnancy and also aids in fertility. Begin practicing as soon as possible, at least 6 months to one year before conception depending on how regular you can devote yourself to your practice.

It is important to consult your doctor about your practice. High- risk pregnancies may be contraindicative.  Please note:  Bikram Yoga does not increase your core body temperature, just as being outside in the summer does not change your core body temperature.  If you’re sweating, your body is cooling itself off.  It’s your natural built in air conditioner!

Having been a student of Bikram Yoga (on and off) since 2002 I had witnessed several pregnant women practice with great success. So when I planned to become pregnant I committed myself to preparing my body for pregnancy with a consistant pratice. I easily became pregnant (I believe because my body was conditioned for it) and practiced the first trimester at home with Rajashree’s home video and then returned to the studio practicing into my 9 th month. It was a wonderful experience to watch my body transform physically in the mirror each week. My practice definitely changed as my body grew making some postures, eagle and spine twist, very challenging! But I felt so strong, connected with my baby and prepared for labor. And did I need it - Our healthy baby boy was born after 31 hours of intense labor! The breathing and meditating that Bikram conditioned me for is the reason, I believe, I was able to avoid the operating room.

Other amazing benefits occurred upon my return to the studio. I dropped the 30 pounds I had gained by my 3rd month postpartum. My body quickly remembered the posture depths I had attained before my pregnancy and my mind and body continue to transform. I encourage anyone who has been practicing and becomes pregnant to utilize Bikram Yoga for a healthy pregnancy and birth experience!

The First Trimester
The first trimester is the most delicate and pivotal time as your body is flushed with higher levels of hormones. Just as every body is different, every pregnancy is different. It is important to listen to your body during the first trimester and allow your body to rest as much as possible to acclimate to the changes going on inside. Many women feel the heat and intensity is too much during this adjustment period, especially if there is extreme morning sickness, which also makes it hard to stay hydrated. IF this is the case, Rajashree’s Home Pregnancy video will be very beneficial to your body and mind during this time.  After this adjustment period, it will be very beneficial to return to the classroom setting for maintenance.

Modifications
Of course there are some modifications to the Bikram sequence. For example, during the standing series we stand with feet hip-width distance versus feet together, and head to knee compressions are skipped. During the spine-strengthening series we practice fish and bridge instead of cobra and bow, and we lay on our sides versus on our backs in savasana. Kristyn will work with you for a complete understanding of all modifications.

Benefits
It makes sense to keep your body flexible, lubricated, strong and supple throughout your pregnancy to insure openness and resilience during labor and beyond.  I did not experience backaches, constipation, hemorrhoids, swelling, headaches, leg pains, or heartburn.  All of which are supposedly normal throughout pregnancy.  Your yoga practice will support you through the massive amount of changes, physically, mentally and emotionally by keeping you in balance.  It will help you to overcome fears and anxieties and allows you to trust yourself on levels you never thought  possible.  Your regular practice will assist in patience and surrender, as well as allow you to tap into an enormous sense of self-empowerment.   You can only imagine with all of these benefits and powerful sensations the incredible messages you will be sending to your unborn child who picks up on everything you think and feel!
